Music Workers Alliance & A Call for Basic Fairness in the Digital Realm

I unexpectedly found myself heavily involved with the Music Workers Alliance, an organization of, by, and for independent musicians and DJs. I got involved with this alliance to improve our working conditions and amplify our voices in the political and economic decisions that affect our lives. We call on all independent musicians and DJs to organize, speak up and take action.

MWA’s members work in many genres — Jazz, Rock, Funk, Hip Hop, Dance, etc. Our musician/DJ activists are affiliated with Arts for Art, Building Beats, Indie Musicians Caucus and the Jazz Advisory Committee of Local 802 AFM, MOMENT NYC, Musicians for Musicians, Sound Mind Collective, Underground Producers Alliance, and many other organizations.

There is a major petition just launched by MWA that calls for basic fairness for recording artists in the digital realm. In these times, with the entire live performance sector shut down for the foreseeable future, this lends even more urgency to this call. The petition has been signed by major artists such as Norah Jones, Rosanne Cash, Bela Fleck, The Black Madonna, Boots Riley, Fred Wesley, Esperanza Spalding, Wayne Shorter, Nels Cline, Beth Orton, Laurie Anderson and over 3000 others.
